Peter Drucker'ın klasik formülüyle: "Yönetim, işleri doğru yapmaktır. Liderlik, doğru işleri yapmaktır." John Kotter (1990) bu iki rolün birbirini dışlamadığını gösterir; organizasyonlar her ikisine de ihtiyaç duyar. Sorun, biri diğerinin yerine geçtiğinde ortaya çıkar: salt yöneticilik değişimi köreltir; salt liderlik kaosu besler. En etkili yöneticiler, hangi anda hangi role ihtiyaç olduğunu bilen kişilerdir.
In Peter Drucker's classic formulation: "Management is doing things right. Leadership is doing the right things." John Kotter (1990) shows these two roles don't exclude each other; organizations need both. The problem arises when one substitutes for the other: pure management stifles change; pure leadership feeds chaos. The most effective executives are those who know which role is needed at which moment.

Power can exist without authority, but authority is always a form of power. French and Raven (1959) show that only one of five power sources is "legitimate power" (authority). This distinction is critical for leadership: a manager who loses the capacity to move people when authority use ends has relied solely on institutional role. True leadership is the ability to create influence even without authority. Dacher Keltner (2016) shows that power over time weakens empathy, curiosity, and collaboration; the very sources that feed the capacity for influence.

Her insanda ego mevcuttur; sorun gücün etkisiyle egonun dışsal öz-farkındalığı bastırmasıdır. Tasha Eurich (2017), araştırmasında insanların %95'inin kendini öz-farkındalıklı zannettiğini ancak yalnızca %10-15'inin gerçekten öyle olduğunu ortaya koyuyor. Kırılma farkı şuradadır: ego, bakış açısını gerçeklikle eşitlediğinde öğrenme durur. Öz-farkındalık ise "ben yanılıyor olabilirim" sorusunu canlı tutmaktır.
Ego and self-awareness are not opposites; they are dynamics that influence each other. Every person has ego; the problem is that under the influence of power, ego suppresses external self-awareness. Tasha Eurich (2017) reveals in her research that 95% of people believe they are self-aware, but only 10-15% actually are. The breaking point difference is here: when ego equates perspective with reality, learning stops. Self-awareness is keeping the question "I might be wrong" alive.

Control and trust cannot coexist at full capacity; as one increases, the space for the other narrows. Mayer, Davis and Schoorman (1995) define trust as "willingness to be vulnerable, independent of the capacity to monitor or control the trusted party." This definition clearly sets out the paradox between control and trust: where control mechanisms operate fully, there is no room for trust. Edmondson's (1999) research shows that the highest-performing teams are built not on control but on trust. Control is a symptom where trust is absent.

Key Distinction
Peter Drucker's distinction: efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things. Success typically measures efficiency; were goals reached? Effectiveness comes first: were the right goals chosen? Daniel Kahneman (2011) shows that success contains more luck than skill, and leaders systematically underestimate this. In the sixth breaking point of the Leadership Series, this distinction is of central importance: the success illusion makes effectiveness invisible and justifies racing toward the wrong goals.

These two concepts are the opposite poles of the same organizational reality. When psychological safety is high, silence decreases; when organizational silence is entrenched, psychological safety is effectively zero. The two cannot coexist at full capacity simultaneously. Morrison and Milliken (2000) show that silence is not an individual character trait but a rational choice shaped by the system; which is why the system, not the person, must be changed. Edmondson (1999) emphasizes that psychological safety is built not through announcement but through consistent leader behavior: small decisions made each day; response to error, how objection is heard, how bad news is received; choose between these two poles.
